General Physical Education Standards

Based on State of Michigan Requirements

The State of Michigan has identified four major Curriculum Areas that Secondary Physical Education Students must show competence in:

Motor Skills, Physical Fitness, Cognitive Concepts, and Character Traits.

There are many Standards within each of these four Curriculum Areas. The Physical Education Department of Beal City Public Schools has identified twelve Standards within the four major Curriculum Areas that the state requires. These represent the basic criteria students must demonstrate in order to earn credit in our classes. Each standard is listed and described below. COMPETENT PARTICIPATION: ----------

Demonstrate competence at a recreational level in at least three lifelong sports such as racquet sports, volleyball, softball, archery, bowling, or golf

For Example: student will be observed participating in at least 3 lifelong sports.

 

SKILL TESTS: ----------

Participate in skill drills & practices and then demonstrate competence in selected skill tests

For Example:

1. Student will be observed actively practicing appropriate skills to prepare for skill tests.

2. Student will demonstrate competence in skill tests in at least three of following sports: softball, golf, basketball, soccer, floor hockey, volleyball, badminton, football, tennis, bowling, and archery.

AEROBIC FITNESS: ---------

Develop and maintain healthy levels of cardiovascular endurance

For Example:

1. Student will be observed participating in a daily run/jog workout.

2. Student will complete a minimum of two 12 min. run tests, scoring at least at a D- level.

STRENGTH/ENDURANCE FITNESS: ---------

Develop and maintain healthy levels of the strength and endurance of selected muscle groups

For Example:

1. Student will be observed participating daily in push ups, sit ups, & chin ups.

2. Student will complete a minimum of two tests each of push ups, sit ups, and chin ups, scoring at least a D- level in each.

FLEXIBILITY: ----------

Maintain healthy levels of flexibility in selected joints of the body

For Example:

1. Student will be observed participating daily in flexibility exercises.

2. Student will complete a minimum of two flexibility tests scoring at least at a D- level.

 

FITNESS CONCEPTS: ----------

Explain the concepts of physical education as they relate to making wise lifestyle choices in the areas of cardiovascular endurance, body composition, strength and endurance, posture, flexibility, weight control, and the beneficial effects of activity

For Example: Student will correctly match the definitions to the terms above.

 

KNOWLEDGEABLE PARTICIPATION:

Apply appropriate rules, strategies, and etiquette in at least three sports

For Example: Student will demonstrate knowledge of rules, strategies and etiquette, through teacher observation, a written test, or by officiating.

UNDERSTAND THE EFFECTS OF ACTIVITY:

Demonstrate an appreciation of the concept that physical activity improves self esteem, mental function, emotional health, and it allows for the growth of leadership and cooperation.

For Example: Student will be observed willingly participating in tournaments as team captains and/or team members, experiencing both winning and losing graciously.

APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR:

Demonstrate the appropriate behavior related to personal and social character traits, for example, giving their best effort, following directions, showing responsibility, having self control, showing leadership, being cooperative, showing a sense of fair play, and handling winning and losing well.

For Example: Points will be added to, or deducted from the student's point total based on their behavior; if enough points are lost that their total is lower that a D- they will not have met this outcome; and good behavior will, of course, add points to their total.
